Getting some exercise into your routine doesn’t mean hitting the gym every day and lifting heavy weights; one of the easiest places to start can be simply walking! Not only does it burn calories, increase your metabolism and improve blood pressure, it’s low impact and can even be a bit of a mood booster so what’s not to love?
In honour of National Walking Month, we’ve put together our top tips for easy ways to fit walking into your day-to-day so you can start feeling the benefits!
Ditch the car 🚘
If you’re lucky enough to live within walking distance to your office or kids school, take a stroll instead of jumping in the car – the fresh air to start your day can make a world of difference! You could even get off your train a stop early, or park your car a little further away and finish your journey on foot; this will mean you’re saving money on fares and fuel too!
Social steps 👫
It doesn’t have to be a boring, lonely walk for the sake of it – instead of sitting at home or in a coffee shop when catching up with friends and family, go for a wander together where you’re free of distractions and can spend some quality time together. You can always end up in a café at the end, but you’ve stretched your legs and got fresh air on the way!
Alfresco lunch breaks 🌞
Ok, we do live in England so we know this isn’t always going to be possible, but when the sun makes an appearance go for a walk to a local park and eat your lunch there – even invite your colleagues along and pack a picnic. It’s nice to get away from your desk and screen – no square eyes here!
Puppy power 🐶
If you’re looking for an excuse to get a dog, here it is! A recent study showed dog ownership is one of the most effective ways to increase fitness through walking, and owners are 20% more active in bad weather – our furry friends need walking come rain or shine so there’s no excuses!
